How to find the perfect social media balance
Were you ever hit with a moment of guilt while on social media but couldn't do anything about it?
Millions of people struggle with that exact issue daily but don't know how to deal with it. In this post, I'll give you some new tips and tricks for achieving a better balance in your life when it comes to social media use.
Tip #1
"Muscling through Muscle Memory"
One of the most simple and effective ways to combat excessive use of social media is by challenging the habits we've built over many years, starting by displacing the app on your phone. You'd be surprised to see how many times you catch yourself trying to open the app when it's not there!
We all know how we can get trapped in a cycle of mindlessly scrolling through social media apps without any intention of stopping. A good way to challenge this is by resetting the algorithm of the app that you find yourself using often from time to time. By doing this you essentially tell the algorithm to stop suggesting videos and posts based on the ones that you watched and interacted with in the past making them more random and preventing the scroll loop.
Now it's not expected of anyone to suddenly turn their life around by reading a blog post. Going back to the title of this blog, it's about not being left in that state of guilt and discouragement. Try this, Write down meaningful or productive activities like calling the person that you wanted to talk to for a while or learning a recipe on slips of paper and put them in a jar. Every time you are feeling down because of social media, pick an activity from the jar.
Depending on your flexibility, use a short break from social media (like a weekend) to learn something new. It could be anything from learning a new skill or working on a mini-project, like baking a unique dish or fixing something broken at home.
These practices aim to replace cheap dopamine with hard-earned dopamine, which is a cornerstone of our mental well-being. Use the time you reclaim from this ongoing hurdle wisely!
